Statement
As an artist, I find myself fascinated by the world around me. I am captivated imagining everyday objects in different settings and scales, where suddenly the prosaic becomes majestic. In my travels and varied experiences, I am inspired by the grandeur in natural and man-made vistas. I’m just as enchanted by the articulated joints of coleoptera as I am with the Fresnel lens at Kilauea Point. In short, life is inspiring.
I am motivated to explore my obsessions by making art. And I work with metal because of the joy I get out of manipulating the material. Working in this way involves my entire body, every muscle working in concert to ply these metal sheets into appealing forms. There is something exquisite about sweating out your ideas. There’s an added layer of appreciation when your muscles ache at the end of the day.
This process of creation allows me to not only delve into the things that interest me, but it also gives me the opportunity to captivate others. I am inspired to create sculpture that engages the viewer. It is my desire that the observers have their own musings and opinions about my work; I want the work to speak for itself, to connect with the viewer on a uniquely personal level that has nothing to do with my associations with the work. If I’ve created a successful piece, each observer will walk away with a unique experience.
